In 2025, extreme weather and climate-related events in Africa affected at least 13 million individuals and resulted in over 3,000 fatalities, as reported by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The report highlights that floods were the most frequently reported hazard, with significant incidents in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo leading to substantial loss of life. It also notes that African glaciers, including those on Mt. Kilimanjaro, have experienced drastic reductions in size, while sea-level rise along various African coasts has surpassed the global average. Despite the challenges, the report indicates progress in developing multi-hazard early warning systems, with ongoing efforts to enhance collaboration among meteorological services and disaster management agencies across the continent.
