The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), representing the governors of all 36 states, has expressed its support for the establishment of state police during a recent meeting in Abuja. This gathering, which extended into the early hours of Thursday, focused on various national issues, with state policing emerging as a key topic amid ongoing security concerns. The governors emphasized the necessity for any new policing framework to be underpinned by clear constitutional provisions that safeguard citizens’ rights. In a communiqué issued after the meeting, NGF Chairman AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq highlighted that the governors reviewed progress on creating a viable state police system and engaged in consultations regarding proposed constitutional amendments and operational frameworks to facilitate its implementation.
