On June 18, 2026, a team of Japanese aid workers from the Association of Medical Doctors of Asia (AMDA) arrived in General Santos, Mindanao, following a devastating earthquake that struck the region the previous week. The earthquake has resulted in 78 fatalities and left 1,339 individuals injured, with over 1.4 million people affected across more than 340,000 households. Initial assessments by the AMDA team revealed that St. Elizabeth Hospital, a key medical facility in the area, has suspended operations due to damage sustained during the quake. In collaboration with local partners and under the guidance of Ms. Gloria Jumamil Mercado, the team is preparing to distribute essential supplies, including food and water, while local officials continue to evaluate building safety and prepare for potential aftershocks and landslides.
