Borno State is currently experiencing a severe cholera outbreak, which has been confirmed since May 1, 2026, affecting 16 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and resulting in over 12,000 suspected cases and at least 95 fatalities as of June 17, 2026. The outbreak is exacerbated by the region's ongoing challenges, including conflict, poverty, and inadequate access to clean water and sanitation. In response, Médecins du Monde has mobilized its resources to establish two Cholera Treatment Units and has implemented strict infection prevention measures to ensure the safety of patients and staff. Additionally, the organization is conducting community sensitization efforts and collaborating with health authorities to enhance cholera surveillance and prevention activities amid the ongoing rainy season, which poses a heightened risk for further transmission.
