The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced a EUR 3 million contribution from the European Union’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) aimed at providing essential food assistance to 336,000 refugees in Uganda. This initiative, in collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister and UNHCR, will utilize digital cash transfers through mobile money and agency banking services to support the most vulnerable and newly arrived refugees, particularly those from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and Sudan. The implementation of cash-based transfers is designed to enhance the efficiency of humanitarian aid, allowing families to address their immediate needs while also bolstering local economies. Additionally, in light of the ongoing Ebola outbreak, the use of digital payments is crucial for minimizing crowding at distribution points and ensuring safe access to food for refugees.
