Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, was sighted on Monday at the Lagos Directorate 1 office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi. A senior source within the anti-graft agency told reporters that the former governor’s visit was linked to the ongoing investigation into allegations of abuse of office and financial misconduct during his administration. Okowa has been under EFCC scrutiny since leaving office over the alleged diversion of approximately N1.3 trillion from the 13 per cent derivation funds allocated to Delta State from the Federation Account between 2015 and 2023. He was first arrested on November 4, 2024, and questioned at the commission’s Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate. Sources indicate that Okowa visited the Lagos office to request the release of his international passport, which is needed for urgent medical treatment abroad. It is not yet clear whether the EFCC granted the request or returned the document. Attempts to get an official comment from the EFCC spokesperson, Mr. Dele Oyewale, were unsuccessful as calls to his line went unanswered. The development comes as the EFCC continues its probe into high-profile corruption cases involving former public officials. Okowa has not issued any public statement on the latest development.
