Overall Situation: A monsoon depression persisting over south Jharkhand and adjoining Odisha, India, combined with a strong active monsoon current over the North Bay of Bengal, is bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to Cox's Bazar, Bandarban and Chattogram districts from 6 to 9 July 2026, with cumulative rainfall forecast at 250–400 mm over this period an increase on the previous day's outlook1 . In the 24 hours to 6:00 AM on 7 July, BMD recorded 283 mm of rainfall in Chattogram, 195 mm in Kutubdia, 129 mm in Cox's Bazar and 128 mm in Bandarban, indicating that the heaviest rainfall band has shifted north into Chattogram while remaining severe across all three districts. Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 remains hoisted for the seaports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra and fishing boats have been advised to remain in shelter. BMD's updated Special Warning Bulletin for Landslide (No. 05/2026, issued 7 July, 13:00 BST) has widened the high-risk classification. Teknaf, Ukhiya and Cox's Bazar Sadar upazilas in Cox's Bazar; Naikhongchhari, Lama and Bandarban Sadar upazilas in Bandarban; and Wards 7, 8, 9 and 14 of Chattogram City Corporation together with Banshkhali upazila in Chattogram are now all classified as high landslide risk with Bandarban Sadar and Banshkhali/Chattogram City Corporation upgraded from medium to high risk since the previous bulletin. Only Rangamati district remains under watch as a comparatively lower risk area1 . The warning has already translated into loss of life. In the early hours of 6 July, three separate landslides struck Rohingya refugee camps (FDMN) in Ukhiya upazila Jamtoli Camp-15, Kutupalong Camp-7 and Balukhali Camp-11 killing eight people, including five children, when hillsides collapsed onto shelters built on unstable slopes. A ninth person died in a separate landslide in Cox's Bazar municipality. Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel, the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) and Rohingya volunteers carried out overnight search-and-rescue operations3 . With rainfall intensifying and risk levels rising across all three districts, the cumulative toll has continued to climb: as of 7 July, 10 fatalities and 88 injuries have been recorded across 170 weather-related incidents since 5 July, and the potential for further casualties and damage remains high over the coming days as forcasted.
