Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Tuesday presented appointment letters to 4,900 newly recruited teachers and approved the engagement of 3,688 BESDA Amana-Amana Cohort V facilitators, describing education as the bedrock of the state’s development agenda. The appointments, unveiled at a ceremony attended by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa; Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad; Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Aisha Garba; and other education stakeholders, form part of the state’s ongoing efforts to address teacher shortages and improve learning outcomes. Governor Yusuf said the recruitment was more than an employment exercise, stressing that it represented an investment in the future of millions of children across Kano State. “This is much more than a recruitment exercise. It is about the hopes and aspirations of millions of our children whose dreams depend on the quality of education they receive. It is about strengthening the foundation upon which the future prosperity, stability and development of our state will be built,” he said. The governor said the newly recruited teachers emerged through a transparent and merit-based process and urged them to regard their appointments as a call to public service. “You have been entrusted with one of the greatest responsibilities in our society—shaping the minds, character and future of the next generation,” he told the teachers. Yusuf recalled that his administration declared a state of emergency on education on June 8, 2024, as part of efforts to restore the sector after years of neglect. According to him, the government has recruited over 13,000 qualified teachers between May 2023 and June 2026, while the latest recruitment of 4,900 teachers represents another milestone in addressing manpower shortages in schools. He also announced the engagement of 3,688 BESDA Cohort V facilitators for an initial period of nine months following the expiration of the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme. The governor said the facilitators would undergo performance assessment at the end of the engagement period, with outstanding performers to be considered for permanent employment. Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described Governor Yusuf as a performing governor whose investment in education aligns with the Federal Government’s human capital development agenda. He praised the governor for infrastructure development across Kano, including road reconstruction, installation of solar-powered streetlights and education sector reforms. Addressing the newly recruited teachers, Alausa urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them through dedication and professionalism. Earlier, the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Malam Yusuf Kabir, said the recruitment marked another significant milestone in the state’s education reform programme aimed at improving access to quality education. He said the board conducted a transparent recruitment process to ensure only qualified and competent teachers were engaged, noting that the exercise would strengthen the quality of teaching in public schools across the state.
