Media and communication scholars, journalists, policymakers and political stakeholders from Nigeria and other parts of the world are expected to converge on Ibadan, Oyo State, for the 6th International Academic Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Association of Media and Communication Researchers of Nigeria (AMCRON). The two-day conference, scheduled for November 25 and 26, 2026, will be hosted by the Department of Mass Communication and Media Technology, Lead City University, Ibadan. According to a statement by the association, the conference is themed, “Beyond the Inverted Pyramid Formula: Democracy, the Media, the Politicians and the People in Nigeria’s General Elections.” The event will be held in a hybrid format, allowing both physical and virtual participation via Zoom. It is open to media practitioners, journalists, academics, politicians, political parties, policymakers, social researchers and other stakeholders. AMCRON President, Prof. Eserinune McCarty Mojaye, called on stakeholders to participate in the conference, describing it as an opportunity to examine the media’s changing role in political communication, election reporting and democratic accountability. Also speaking, the association’s Director of Networking and Publicity, Dr. Kehinde Oyesomi, said the conference would explore the impact of strategic communication, digital media and media ownership on public trust and the credibility of electoral information. According to the organisers, the conference comes at a time when technological advancements and changing political realities are reshaping traditional approaches to news reporting and political communication. The forum will provide a platform for scholars, media professionals and election stakeholders to examine issues including media framing, digital propaganda, fact-checking and the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence on public opinion and democratic stability. The organisers said discussions would also focus on generating practical recommendations to strengthen democratic institutions, promote ethical communication practices, protect vulnerable groups and tackle online harassment. Paper presentations and panel discussions will cover several thematic areas, including media practice and election reporting, digital media and technology, democracy and electoral accountability, citizen participation, political communication and peacebuilding, gender and digital violence, as well as strategic communication, propaganda, advertising and public relations. The organisers expressed optimism that the conference would deepen collaboration between researchers, practitioners and policymakers while contributing to ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic governance and responsible media practice in Nigeria.
