The U.S. Air Force and Space Force accept applicants between the ages of 17 and 42, while the Army allows enlistment from ages 17 to 35. The Coast Guard accepts recruits aged 17 to 41, the Marine Corps has an age limit of 17 to 28, and the Navy accepts applicants between 17 and 41 years old. The military notes that age waivers may be available in certain circumstances, depending on the branch and an applicant’s qualifications. ASVAB exam mandatory for all recruits Every person seeking to enlist must take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), the standard entrance examination used across the U.S. military. Each military branch sets its own minimum qualifying score, while an applicant’s performance also determines the military occupations for which they may be eligible. Prospective recruits can access official ASVAB resources to locate testing centres, review sample questions, prepare for the examination and understand how scores are calculated. Recruiters also assist candidates in scheduling the test and explaining branch-specific score requirements. High school diploma or GED required The military requires applicants to possess either a high school diploma or a General Educational Development (GED) certificate before enlisting. However, officials note that there are fewer enlistment opportunities for GED holders. Those with a GED may improve their chances of acceptance by earning college credits or achieving higher ASVAB scores. College graduates may also pursue a pathway to become commissioned officers after meeting additional requirements. Medical and physical fitness standards All applicants are required to undergo a medical examination during the enlistment process to determine whether they are physically and medically fit for military service. In addition, every branch of the U.S. military requires recruits to pass a physical fitness assessment, although the specific standards vary.
