By Shina Abubakar, Osogbo A socio-political movement, General Gbasky Movement, has urged major political parties and stakeholders in Osun State to promote issue-based campaigns and ensure a peaceful governorship election on August 15. The group called on political parties, security agencies, religious leaders, traditional rulers, youth and women organisations to work together toward a violence-free electoral process. Speaking at a summit held at Leisure Spring Hotel Hall, Osogbo, with the theme, “Mobilising for Unity, Progress and Grassroots Development,” the Convener of the movement, Hon. Olufemi Aponbiede, said the gathering was aimed at fostering unity among stakeholders and promoting peace before, during and after the election. Aponbiede said elections are temporary, but the unity and development of communities should remain a lasting priority. “As we approach the forthcoming elections, this is the time for unity, not division. Elections will come and go, but our communities and relationships must remain strong. We must reject bitterness, violence and politics of hatred. Instead, let us embrace peace, mutual respect and constructive engagement,” he said. He stressed the movement’s commitment to people-centred leadership, noting that sustainable development begins at the grassroots through policies that improve the lives of citizens. The convener identified youth empowerment, women inclusion, support for farmers, entrepreneurship, improved education, healthcare and infrastructure as key areas requiring continued attention. “Our strength lies in our unity. When we stand together, no challenge is too great and no goal is beyond our reach,” he said. Aponbiede urged political actors across party lines to conduct peaceful campaigns and avoid actions capable of threatening the peace of the state. He also encouraged eligible voters to participate actively in the electoral process while respecting differing political views. “I call on every member here today to become an ambassador of peace. Let us campaign with dignity, respect opposing views and encourage every eligible citizen to participate peacefully in the electoral process,” he said. He assured that the General Gbasky Movement would continue to promote inclusion, transparency, accountability and sustainable grassroots development. Aponbiede expressed optimism that collaboration among political leaders, security agencies, religious institutions and community stakeholders would contribute to a peaceful election and the overall development of Osun State.
