The 23rd Commonwealth Games officially began in spectacular fashion on Thursday night as Team Nigeria made a memorable entrance during a dazzling Opening Ceremony at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro Arena, setting the stage for what the National Sports Commission (NSC) hopes will be another successful campaign. Dressed in elegant green-and-white outfits reflecting the nation’s colours, the Nigerian contingent drew warm applause from thousands of spectators as they marched proudly into the packed arena alongside athletes from 74 Commonwealth Games Associations. The team’s striking appearance quickly emerged as one of the highlights of the colourful Parade of Nations. In a historic first for the Commonwealth Games, both Para and non-Para athletes entered the arena together before the ceremony officially commenced, underscoring the movement’s commitment to inclusion and unity. The ceremony celebrated Scotland’s rich cultural heritage through a captivating blend of music, dance, digital storytelling and cutting-edge technology. Spectators were also treated to a vibrant showcase of Glasgow’s industrial legacy and status as a UNESCO City of Music. A dramatic entrance by His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who appeared on stage through the iconic Doctor Who TARDIS, added to the evening’s spectacle before the King formally declared the Games open. In his address, he welcomed athletes and officials from across the Commonwealth, urging them to embrace friendship, excellence and unity through sport. Nigeria has arrived in Glasgow with a 74-member athlete contingent competing in 10 sports: athletics, boxing, weightlifting, para powerlifting, para athletics, judo, swimming, track cycling, 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball. The NSC has set an ambitious target of winning between 16 and 20 gold medals, expressing confidence in the quality and experience of the country’s athletes. Nigeria’s squad combines established international stars with emerging talents expected to spearhead the nation’s medal challenge. Leading the team are world record holder Tobi Amusan, sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi, Samuel Ogazi, Favour Ashe, shot putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, long jumper Prestina Ochonogor, triple jumper Ruth Usoro, weightlifters Rafiatu Lawal and Onome Didih, alongside para powerlifting champions Folashade Oluwafemiayo, Esther Nworgu and Roland Ezuruike. Nigeria remains one of the Commonwealth Games’ most successful nations since making its debut in 1950, having amassed 271 medals comprising 82 gold, 84 silver and 105 bronze. Attention now shifts to competition, which begins on Friday, with Team Nigeria opening its medal quest in 3×3 basketball, boxing and para powerlifting, where the country’s first podium opportunities await.
