Fourteen amateur teams are set to jostle for glory in a week-long pre-season football tournament in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. Organized jointly by the management of Bayelsa United and the organizers of the State Governor’s Cup (popularly known as the Prosperity Cup), the tournament is designed to help Bayelsa United and other participating clubs fine-tune their preparations for the upcoming football season. The interim chairman of Bayelsa United, Dr. Peter Singabele, and the Director-General of the Prosperity Cup, Mr. Ono Akpe—who also serves as a board member of the club—disclosed this in a joint statement to sports writers in Yenagoa. According to the organizers, the tournament features 14 teams, including the quarter-finalists from the recent Prosperity Cup, several top Yenagoa-based sides, and three guest teams from outside the state: Ereme Jackson FC (Port Harcourt), Excellent FC (Ughelli), and 36 Lions FC (Sapele). The local teams competing in the pre-season tournament are Prosperity Cup finalists Akinima/Biogbo FC, Mountain of the Lord Deliverance Ministry (MLDM FC), Krosaders FC, Brazil FC, Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM FC), Bayelsa United Feeders, Federal University Otuoke (FUO Kings Grassroots FC), NDU Oilers, Orange Boys, and Bayelsa Starlets Academy. The tournament, which kicked off on Wednesday, July 22, will run through July 29 at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa. The organizers urged all participating teams to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship and strictly adhere to tournament rules, noting that the event offers a massive platform to expose grassroots talent beyond the state-owned Bayelsa United.
