The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, has expressed satisfaction with the formidable athletics squad representing the country at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, which officially opened yesterday, July 23. According to the AFN, the six-day track and field competition will run from Monday, July 27 to Saturday, August 1 at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow. Okowa, who is leading the AFN contingent, said the arrival of marquee athletes—including women’s 100m hurdles world record holder Tobi Amusan, reigning sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi, Favour Ashe, Olympic men’s 400m finalist Samuel Ogazi, Rosemary Chukwuma, shot put veteran Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, and javelin thrower Chinecherem Nnamdi—has bolstered the federation’s target of winning seven gold medals. “The number of top Nigerian athletes participating in these games is encouraging. It signals a renewed spirit and commitment to represent their fatherland at international competitions,” Okowa said. “In camp, we also have US-based Alaba Akintola, Adekalu Fakorede, Udodi Onwuzurike, hurdler Nathaniel Ezekiel, Edidiong Okon Udo, Temitope Adeshina, Prestina Ochonogor, Ruth Usoro, veteran Patience Okon-George, Chidera Ezeakor, Oyesade Oyetade, Obiageri Amaechi, Jessica Orji, and Jami Schlueter in the decathlon. Schlueter will be competing for Nigeria for the first time after recently switching his nationality from England. Teenage sensation Miracle Ezechukwu is also in the team. “I feel very happy with the great spirit in camp, and we can easily meet our target of seven gold medals.” In a statement signed by AFN Media Coordinator Dr. Kola Oredipe, Team Nigeria will feature in over 20 track and field events. These include the men’s and women’s 100m, 200m, and 400m; the women’s 100m hurdles and men’s 400m hurdles; the men’s, women’s, and mixed 4x100m relays; the mixed 4x400m relay; the women’s high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, and hammer; as well as the men’s shot put, javelin, and decathlon. The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games runs through August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland.
