85-Year-Old Community Leader Shot Dead in Edo

Unidentified gunmen have reportedly shot dead an 85-year-old community leader, Hon. Reuben Owie, at his residence in Iguosa, near Okhunhun, Benin City, Edo State. Owie, who was the Secretary of Iyowa Community, was reportedly attacked by two gunmen on August 2, 2026. The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident to journalists in Benin on Saturday. She said the police received a report from the deceased’s son, Osayomwanbo Owie, following the attack at the victim’s residence at No. 2 Abu Street, Iguosa, off Okhunhun Road, Benin City. Ikoedem said police officers visited the scene, documented the incident and recovered relevant evidence, adding that investigation was ongoing. She said efforts were being intensified to identify and arrest the suspects. The police spokesperson added that the deceased’s remains were conveyed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
