North-Eastern University, Gombe (NEU Gombe), has introduced a 50 per cent Founder’s Scholarship for students enrolling in six science-based degree programmes as the institution seeks to position young Nigerians for emerging opportunities in the oil and gas sector. The scholarship, announced by the university’s Pro-Chancellor and Founder, Dr Sani Jauro (Dan Lawan of Gombe), is targeted at prospective students seeking admission into programmes considered relevant to the growing demand for skilled manpower in the sector. Jauro announced the initiative during the 2026 graduation ceremony of Pen Resource Academy, encouraging graduating students and other prospective candidates to take advantage of the scholarship opportunity. The programmes covered by the scholarship are B.Sc. Petroleum Chemistry, B.Sc. Environmental Management and Toxicology, B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry, B.Sc. Microbiology, B.Sc. Biotechnology, and B.Sc. Urban and Regional Planning. He said the initiative was introduced in response to emerging economic opportunities associated with oil exploration in the Kolmani area of Gombe and Bauchi states. According to him, the development of the oil and gas industry in the North-East would require a new generation of professionals with the scientific and technical skills needed to participate meaningfully in the sector. Jauro said the university was therefore aligning its academic programmes with emerging economic realities by equipping students with relevant knowledge and practical skills. “We want to ensure that our students are not only academically qualified but also equipped with the practical knowledge and professional competence required to compete in the labour market,” he said. He disclosed that NEU Gombe was also working towards establishing an Oil and Gas Competency Development Centre to provide specialised training for students and professionals.
