Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has said that no society can achieve sustainable growth without reliable roads. Jonathan stated this Monday while commissioning 18 township roads spanning 49.7 kilometres in Bauchi metropolis. The former President explained that the scale of the investment reflects purposeful governance under Governor Bala Mohammed. “This 49.7km road network is more than asphalt. It is a celebration of visionary leadership, responsible governance, and purposeful investment in infrastructure that directly improves the quality of life of our people.” He noted that this was his third official visit to Bauchi, adding that “the state has always occupied a special place in my heart.” Police nab 56-year-old over alleged indian hemp distribution in Delta Tinubu to clerics: Speak out against terror, kidnapping, banditry “Roads remain critical for development, connecting communities, facilitating commerce, creating opportunities, and promoting inclusive growth. No society can achieve sustainable growth without reliable roads.” Jonathan urged residents to protect the new infrastructure, echoing the governor’s appeal. “Roads are investments in your collective future. Their maintenance and protection are shared responsibilities.” Jonathan also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction and modernisation of four major recreational parks in Bauchi metropolis, with the projects valued at N4.68 billion. The projects include the Golden Jubilee Park, General Hassan Usman Katsina Park, Shehu Azare Park along Adamu Jumba Road, and Suleiman Adamu Park, named after the late Emir of Bauchi. The Bauchi State Government said the projects are expected to be completed within 12 months, with 70 per cent payment already made to the contractors. The former President applauded the Bauchi State government for investing in recreational infrastructure, stressing that public parks were necessities rather than luxuries in modern urban planning. He said the facilities would promote healthier living, strengthen communities and create economic opportunities. Jonathan commended Governor Bala Mohammed, recalling that he served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory during his administration, adding, “He has continued to justify the confidence reposed in him by the people.” Earlier in his remarks, Governor Bala Mohammed said the 18 roads were designed to link key residential areas, commercial centres, schools and public facilities across the Bauchi metropolis. Mohammed said the N58.7 billion projects were constructed to standard with durable pavement, drainage, culverts, road markings, and solar-powered street lighting on selected routes. According to him, the impact of the 49.7km intervention is already evident in improved mobility, a boost to economic activity, and job creation, calling on residents to safeguard the assets. The governor added that the projects were part of his administration’s urban renewal and environmental sustainability programme designed to provide residents with safe and functional spaces for recreation, relaxation and community interaction.
