The Gombe State University (GSU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the state government to address its demands or face a total and indefinite strike. In a statement jointly signed by the branch chairman, Dr Mustapha S. Shehu, and secretary, Dr Aliyu Usman Shelleng, the union said the decision followed the report of the National Executive Council (NEC) visitation to the branch. The union said NEC had directed the branch to commence a comprehensive and indefinite strike if its grievances remained unresolved after the ultimatum. According to the statement, the strike will begin on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. ASUU members are demanding payment of the 2021–2024 backlog of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), arrears of the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage awards, implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage and payment of N30,000 minimum wage arrears. They are also demanding full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, enhanced postgraduate supervision allowance, teaching practice, industrial training and field trip allowances, as well as enhanced responsibility allowances. Daily Trust reports that the union had, three months ago, appealed to the state government to settle the outstanding entitlements to avert industrial action. Shehu said all efforts by the union’s leadership to engage the government over the unpaid entitlements had failed.
