By Ben Ngwakwe, Gombe GOMBE: The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University (GSU) Branch, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Gombe State Government to resolve its outstanding demands or face a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike. The branch Chairman, Dr Mustapha Shehu Muhammad, disclosed this while speaking with Vanguard in Gombe on Thursday. Muhammad said the ultimatum followed a directive from the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU, mandating branches with unresolved issues to issue 14-day ultimatums to their respective governments before embarking on industrial action. He said the union’s grievances included the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government, as well as outstanding wage and allowance arrears owed academic staff. According to him, the state government was yet to pay arrears of the N30,000 minimum wage introduced in 2019, as well as arrears of the 25/35 per cent wage award. He also listed the non-implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage and outstanding Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) among the issues requiring urgent attention. Muhammad said the failure to address the demands had heightened concerns among academic staff of the university and could eventually affect academic activities if not resolved. He explained that the branch issued the ultimatum in compliance with the resolution of the union’s NEC, adding that members had been directed to commence a total, comprehensive and indefinite industrial action upon the expiration of the 14-day period if the outstanding issues remained unresolved. The ASUU chairman urged the Gombe State Government to urgently engage the union and address its demands before the deadline. He stressed that the union’s position was primarily aimed at securing the welfare and entitlements of academic staff and ensuring that outstanding obligations were fulfilled. Muhammad expressed hope that the state government would respond positively to the demands and avert a disruption of academic activities at Gombe State University.
