A former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Peter Ajang Azi, is dead. According to the family of the deceased, Azi died on Thursday, August 13, 2026. Speaking on behalf of the family, John Daniel Azi said the former Speaker “peacefully joined his Lord” on Thursday. “With total submission to the will of God Almighty, the Azi Ajang Family announce the passing unto glory of their son, brother and father, Peter Ajang Azi, former Speaker, Plateau State House of Assembly,” he said. The family said burial arrangements would be announced at a later date. Azi, who represented Jos North West, was the Speaker of the Assembly on the platform of APC. He was elected June 10, 2015, after a 12-12 tie with Istifanus Mwansat. The election was declared inconclusive. However, he won on the second day when Mwansat stepped down. He was impeached on July 11, 2018, by 17 out of 24 members. Meanwhile, the Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District and former Governor of Plateau State, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the former Speaker. Senator Lalong described the death of the former Speaker as a painful and devastating loss to his family, constituents, Plateau State and the political community. He recalled with fondness the contributions of Azi to the development of Plateau State, particularly his service as Speaker. Senator Lalong said the deceased was a trusted political ally and a committed member of the All Progressives Congress who remained dedicated to serving the people, especially at the grassroots.
