A young medical doctor, Stephen Vanman, has been found dead after he got missing while on his way to Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital. Weekend Trust gathered that the deceased medical personnel, who completed his housemanship last year, was reported missing since last Saturday, but was found dead on Thursday with stab wounds. The deceased’s colleagues told Weekend Trust that his family reportedly informed the association that he had been unreachable since on Saturday night before they later heard about his death. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of health care workers who travel and work in challenging conditions to care for others. Already, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch, has expressed grief over the death of Dr Vanman, whose lifeless body was found in Port Harcourt. The NMA said the cause of his death remained unknown, while calling on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding his death and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice. In a statement by the secretary of the NMA in Rivers State, Dr Diamond Tonye-Obene, the association noted that its State Officers Committee (SOC) was informed of Dr Vanman’s disappearance after he reportedly went to work at a private hospital, which name was not immediately known. According to the statement, the NMA leadership under Dr Prof Ureh Oparaodu, immediately contacted the deceased’s relatives and roommates to ascertain his whereabouts, adding that its State Officers Committee later accompanied the family to the Mini-Okoro Police Station, Rumuobiakani, Port Harcourt, where they were informed that his body had been found by police personnel at Market Junction, along Aba Road on Sunday morning, August 9, 2026. The body was subsequently deposited in a mortuary, according to the association. Police authorities in Rivers State are yet to comment on the incident as the spokesperson, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, told Weekend Trust yesterday to give the specific location where the incident happened.
