Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have neutralised two terrorists and intercepted a suspected explosives courier carrying 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives in Zamfara State. The operations, conducted on Friday, came as troops intensified offensive operations against terrorist groups and their logistics networks across the North-West. The troops of Sector 2 were conducting a clearance operation around Garin Kaso in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area when they encountered the terrorists and engaged them in a fierce gun battle. Two terrorists were killed during the initial encounter, while the troops recovered two rifles, two magazines, nine rounds of ammunition and two motorcycles. He said the troops successfully fought through the ambush, inflicting further casualties on the terrorists and forcing the surviving fighters to flee. Danja said the exact number of casualties inflicted during the second encounter had yet to be established. “Reports from communities within the general area indicated that several terrorists with apparent gunshot wounds, as well as bodies of their neutralised colleagues, were evacuated by the fleeing elements following the encounter,” he said. In a separate operation on the same day, troops conducting routine snap checks on vehicles intercepted a suspected arms and explosives courier, a 57-year-old man identified Sani Umar. A search of his vehicle led to the recovery of 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives. The explosives were allegedly being transported from Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State to suspected terrorist elements operating in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State. The suspect, his vehicle and the recovered explosives have been taken into custody for further investigation. The latest operations, according to the task force, are part of efforts to simultaneously target terrorist hideouts and disrupt the logistics networks supplying them with weapons, explosives and other resources. The Theatre Command reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations and denying terrorists and other criminal elements freedom of action across the North-West.
