The G100 has congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election in Osun State, saying the outcome of the election has provided Nigeria’s opposition parties with a template for the 2027 general elections. In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the group, the G100 also commended the people of Osun State for what it described as their determination and courage in the election. The group particularly praised opposition leaders and governorship candidates who stepped down from the race and backed Adeleke, saying their decision demonstrated the importance of placing the broader democratic interest above individual political ambitions. “We congratulate, even more importantly, the people of Osun State, whose determination and courage have once again prevailed,” the statement said. The G100 said the significance of Adeleke’s victory extended beyond his re-election, arguing that the outcome had demonstrated the potential of opposition parties to overcome fragmentation through cooperation and compromise. “The significance of what has happened in Osun goes far beyond the re-election of one Governor. Osun has provided a template for 2027,” it said. According to the group, the major challenge confronting Nigeria’s opposition is not a lack of popular support but its fragmented nature. “For weeks now, the G100 has argued that Nigeria’s opposition does not suffer from a shortage of popular support. Its greatest challenge is fragmentation,” the statement said. It added that the Osun election had shown what could be achieved when opposition forces identified a common objective, made compromises and consolidated their strengths behind a candidate considered capable of winning. The group described the decision by some governorship candidates to withdraw from the race and support Adeleke as an important lesson for opposition leaders preparing for 2027. “The governorship candidates who stepped down and supported Governor Adeleke were each entitled to pursue their own ambitions. They chose instead to ask a more important question: what outcome best serves the people and strengthens the democratic cause?” it said. The G100 urged opposition leaders at the national level to adopt a similar approach ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that the interest of the country should take precedence over individual ambitions and party interests. “That is precisely the question the national opposition must now confront. Nigeria is bigger than any candidate, any ambition and any political party,” the statement said. The group further urged opposition leaders who believe Nigeria requires a different political direction in 2027 to demonstrate what it described as the “courage, restraint and willingness to compromise” witnessed in Osun. “Osun has shown the pathway. The task now is to take that spirit of cooperation to the national stage,” the G100 said.
