No fewer than five people died, while nine others were rescued after two buildings collapsed during heavy rainfall in different parts of Kano State on Saturday. The first incident occurred at Gaida Sabon Titi, along Salbas Filling Station Road in Kumbotso Local Government Area, where a two-storey building under construction collapsed during the downpour. An eyewitness, Idris Mustapha Nasir, told Daily Trust that several people were believed to have been trapped under the rubble. He said firefighters, assisted by residents, immediately commenced rescue operations at the scene. The spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusuf, confirmed the incident, saying four people were later confirmed dead by medical doctors at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano. He identified the deceased as Sunusi Surajo, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim Ibrahim, 25; and Abubakar Mohammed, 30, all of whom were labourers. Saminu said another building collapsed at Kurna Islamiya School, also known as Khadijah Idris Bala School, during school hours. According to him, nine people were affected in the incident, with eight rescued, while a 13-year-old student, Khadijah Mohammed, was confirmed dead by doctors. He urged residents, particularly building engineers, contractors and labourers, to exercise caution during the rainy season to prevent further loss of lives.
