5 farmers die in Niger boat accident

Five farmers, comprising four men and a woman, have died after a boat capsized on River Kudi in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State. The incident occurred at Shaba-Woshi-Kpaya village in Edotsu Ward on Saturday afternoon. A resident, Muhammadu Dan-Asabe, told Daily Trust that the victims were heading to their farms when the boat capsized. The Director of Information and Special Duties at the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Dr Ibrahim Audu Hussaini, confirmed the incident. He said the victims were travelling from their village to their farms when the boat capsized. The deceased were identified as Yahaya Abubakar, Usman Abubakar, Lami Hussaini, Baba Ahmadu and Salihu Aliyu. Hussaini said the remains of the five victims had been recovered and buried on Saturday. Boat mishaps are common in riverine communities, particularly during farming seasons when residents depend on waterways to access their farms.
