Nigeria’s Godwin Okoko produced a stunning final-round performance to secure his best finish on the Sunshine Development Tour, placing second at the Absa Ruiru Invitational in Kenya. The 21-year-old Okoko carded an impressive five-under-par 65 in the final round to finish on seven-under-par 203, earning Sh227,000 and 172 Order of Merit points in the East Africa Swing event. The Nigerian professional recovered strongly to challenge for the title, making birdies on the eighth, 13th, 15th and 18th holes, while an eagle on the par-five 10th further boosted his score. His only blemish came on the sixth hole, but the dropped shot did little to derail an otherwise impressive closing round that secured a runner-up finish behind Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera. “I am very happy with the way I played today and with the result. I knew I had to put together a good final round and I was able to stay focused and make some big shots when I needed them. Finishing second is a big step for me and gives me a lot of confidence going forward,” Okoko said. The result represents a significant breakthrough for Okoko on the Sunshine Development Tour, which provides competitive opportunities for emerging professionals across Africa. Nsanzuwera claimed the title after shooting a flawless five-under-par 65 to finish on 10-under-par 200. The Rwandan, who plays at Kigali Golf Resort & Villas, also won the opening leg of the East Africa Swing at Thika Sports Club. His final round featured five birdies and no dropped shots, earning him Sh400,000 and 210 Order of Merit points. Kenya Railway Golf Club professional Mike Kisia finished third on six-under-par 204 after a three-under-par 67, earning Sh153,000 and 116 Order of Merit points. The Absa Ruiru Invitational attracted professional and amateur golfers from across Africa, with competitors also battling for valuable Sunshine Development Tour Order of Merit, Official World Golf Ranking and World Amateur Golf Ranking points. Supported by Absa Bank Kenya, the tournament forms part of efforts to strengthen competitive pathways for emerging African golfers. The East Africa Swing continues at Kigali Golf Resort & Villas from September 11 to 13 for the SportsBiz Africa Golf Championship, where Nsanzuwera will seek another strong performance on home soil.
