Zambia: Statement by the Spokesperson on the general elections

The European Union has acknowledged the announcement by the Electoral Commission of Zambia of the results of the general elections held on 13 August, which saw the re-election of President Hakainde Hichilema. The EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) was deployed throughout the country to monitor the process. In its preliminary findings, the EU EOM noted that election day was calm overall, but restrictions on campaigning and advantages of incumbency contributed to an uneven playing field. The mission also pointed to serious incidents and procedural irregularities during counting and tabulation, impacting the transparency and credibility of the process.
