Central African Republic authorities have ordered the closure of an artisanal gold mine near the Cameroonian border after a collapse killed 49 people, according to Mines Minister Rufin Beltoungou. The dead include 35 Central Africans, 12 Cameroonians, and two Chadians. A local mining association official had earlier reported more than 100 deaths, but a prosecutor said rescue efforts were ongoing and the casualty figure was still being established. The incident highlights the dangers of informal mining operations across Africa.
