Former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.), has revealed that national pride motivated his administration to complete the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. In an interview monitored by Vanguard on CBS News and posted on X, Babangida recalled being angered by an American television programme that depicted Nigeria as a country that starts ambitious projects without finishing them. The programme featured Nigerian broadcaster Onyeka Onwenu and highlighted the incomplete bridge as an example of an abandoned 'elephant project' in Africa. Babangida said the programme made him deeply concerned about Nigeria's international image and that national pride drove the decision to finish the bridge.
