The number of international students starting studies in the United States has dropped sharply due to tighter immigration policies and uncertainty around student visas. New data shows a 17 per cent decline in new international student enrolment in autumn 2025 compared to the previous year, according to a CNBC report. The decline may deepen further, with international applications also falling significantly. Data from the US Department of State and the Institute of International Education attribute the drop to changes in immigration policies and visa restrictions. The Common App reported a 10 per cent decline in international applicants for the 2026-27 academic year, the steepest fall in its records.
