Sliding Towers Global Ltd, a Nigerian building construction and consultancy company, has attributed recurring flooding in parts of the country to poor adherence to building regulations and urban planning standards. In a statement issued in Awka, the company said that while rainfall often triggers flooding, the severity of damage is frequently linked to decisions made before the rains begin. The company noted that the 2026 flood season was particularly significant, citing the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency's annual flood outlook, which identified 14,118 communities across 266 local government areas in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory as high-risk flood areas. The statement highlighted that every rainy season brings images of roads disappearing beneath water, cars stalling, homes submerged, and businesses shutting their doors.
