The Nigerian Senate has passed the Federal Road Safety Corps Amendment Bill, which proposes a fine of 50,000 naira for preaching, trading, or hawking inside commercial transport vehicles. The bill aims to reduce driver distractions and improve road safety, according to lawmakers. It also includes provisions that could restrict the use of loudspeakers for the Muslim call to prayer. Legal experts, including Kunle Edun, SAN, Norrison Quakers, SAN, and Chris Agbiti, have analyzed the bill, questioning whether it infringes on fundamental rights such as freedom of thought, religion, and expression. The bill still requires presidential assent to become law.
