Former Lyft drivers in Nashville are transitioning to new roles cleaning and maintaining Waymo robotaxis as the ride-hailing company shifts its focus to autonomous vehicles. Lyft's subsidiary Flexdrive is set to open an 80,000-square-foot facility in October to service Waymos, employing about 70 full-time workers, roughly half of whom previously drove for Lyft. Jonathan Baines, a former Lyft driver of about a decade, now works as a fleet operations lead at Waymo's existing Nashville depot, which Lyft took over in June. This development illustrates the broader impact of artificial intelligence on the workforce, where some jobs are eliminated while new ones are created around the machines.
