The author's grandparents, Bob and Ruth McMillan, wanted to age at home and lived there until dying in their 90s in 2024 and 2025. Their six children each spent about 30 hours a week helping care for them at one point. Even with family help, 24/7 paid care eventually cost $4,000 a week. The grandparents benefited from relatively short end-of-life illnesses, a pension, and six adult children ready to pitch in.
