The Portfolio Committee on Mineral and Petroleum Resources has decided to hold further engagements with relevant institutions after a briefing on a petition from Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA) and its partners. The petition raised concerns about mining accountability, capital flight, and the abandonment of mining-affected communities. During a virtual meeting, MACUA outlined socio-economic and environmental consequences of mining operations, corporate accountability, rehabilitation obligations, and the impact of corporate disinvestment, particularly in Kriel, Mpumalanga, and Jagersfontein, Free State. The committee agreed to obtain more information and responses from institutions whose roles were highlighted during the presentation.
