Shehu Sani: Subsidy return will distort Nigeria’s economy

Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's promise to restore fuel subsidy if elected in 2027, calling it 'deception' and harmful to Nigeria's economy. Sani argued that the subsidy regime previously cost the country trillions of naira and fueled corruption and smuggling. He advocated for revamping local refineries instead of returning to subsidies, noting that Nigeria spent between N3 trillion and N4 trillion on petroleum subsidies, which he described as unsustainable.
