The United States has warned that Iran's disruption of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz will worsen food insecurity in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African countries. Speaking at a UN Security Council debate, US envoy Jennifer Locetta said the attacks obstruct nearly one-quarter of global oil trade and one-third of global fertilizer trade. She noted that fertilizer shortages and rising energy costs would impact food production in the region.
