Amazon is shutting down Mechanical Turk, its crowdsourced work platform, on September 30. The platform, launched in 2005, became popular among gig workers for completing small tasks. Amazon cited regular evaluations of its programs as the reason for the closure, and the platform has struggled with the rise of AI, which can perform many of the tasks previously done by humans.
