The Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) has warned lenders against harassing or humiliating borrowers over unpaid loans, stating that debt recovery must be conducted lawfully and with respect for consumers' dignity. In a statement, CREDICORP listed prohibited practices such as threats, abuse, contacting borrowers' family members or employers, and public shaming on social media. The corporation emphasized that being in debt is not a crime.
