At the annual Hot Chips semiconductor conference in Palo Alto, California, a key theme was that AI is speeding up chip design. OpenAI presented its Jalapeño chip, which it claims outperforms Nvidia's Blackwell chips at AI inference, partly due to AI-assisted design and software processes. Google's tensor processing unit team credited DeepMind researchers for using AI to make its latest TPU v8 chips 6% more power efficient and 6% more powerful. Nvidia has also embraced AI-driven chip design with software libraries that apply AI to various aspects of chip manufacturing.
