President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football to address repeated failures to qualify for major tournaments. The directive was announced by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. The President stated that the reform must strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions, and accountability. He noted that while other sports have progressed, football has struggled due to structural deficits.
