US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing federal agencies to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America', in a symbolic move amid escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa. The order, signed on Thursday, instructs US federal agencies to use the new name on government maps, official documents, and databases. However, Trump's directive does not give the United States authority to rename Canada's portion of the lake or force Canada, international organizations, mapmakers, or other countries to recognize the new name. Speaking after signing the order, Trump joked that the United States now had a gulf and a lake named after America and suggested that an ocean could be next.
