The South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria, despite its significant contributions to the Federation Account through hydrocarbon exports, has the worst federal road network in the country. No major federal road investment has been made in the region for over 25 years, except for the recently completed Bonny-Bodo highway. The last major federal highway construction in the area was the Benin-Asaba expressway during the Obasanjo administration. This neglect has hindered economic development and connectivity in the region.
