With five months to the 2027 general elections, the National Peace Committee, chaired by former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, in partnership with The Kukah Centre, brought together presidential candidates and national chairpersons of political parties at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, on August 18, 2026. They signed a National Peace Accord aimed at promoting and sustaining peace before, during, and after the elections. The agreement was signed by President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda. Other signatories included Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and the candidate of the African Action Congress.
