In Mali, where an estimated nine out of ten women and girls have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM), a community leader named Sidi Haidara has transformed from a supporter of the practice to an advocate against it. He now travels from village to village spreading the message that no tradition should compromise a girl's health, rights, or future. His efforts come amid deeply entrenched social norms and a lack of specific laws criminalizing FGM in Mali.
