Nigerian singer Tekno has questioned the widely held belief that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti originated Afrobeats. In an interview with Hot 97 FM in New York, Tekno argued that several Nigerian music pioneers, especially from the eastern part of the country, played significant roles in shaping the genre. He acknowledged Fela's contributions but said his international exposure helped him gain more recognition. Tekno specifically mentioned late highlife musician Oliver De Coque and other eastern Nigerian icons whose contributions have been underrecognized.
