Kidnappers collect N7.78bn ransom in one year — SBM

A report by SBM Intelligence reveals that kidnappers in Nigeria collected N7.779 billion in ransom between July 2025 and June 2026, which is 34 per cent of the N22.856 billion demanded during that period. This marks a sharp increase from the 5.35 per cent collection rate in the previous cycle. Although the total ransom demanded was lower than the previous N48 billion, the report attributes the decline to an extraordinary N30 billion demand in the Enuma sisters' abduction. The 2026 figures are driven by mass hostage-taking incidents involving groups with significant leverage and capacity to secure ransom payments.
