Barcelona football club cancelled plans to honour its eight Spain internationals who won the World Cup, following a dispute over the treatment of a fan carrying a Catalan pro-independence flag. The tribute was initially scheduled for the first La Liga home game against Athletic Bilbao. The decision came after a supporter's estelada flag was confiscated by police before an away match against Elche. Barcelona criticised the police action, calling the flag a legally endorsed symbol and the display a legitimate exercise of freedom of expression.
