This article reflects on Nigeria's public health administration, highlighting the evolution of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) since its establishment in 2011. The NCDC emerged from existing structures within the Federal Ministry of Health, including the Epidemiology Division, the Avian Influenza Project, and the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme. Its legal framework was strengthened with the NCDC Act signed into law in November 2018. The article pays tribute to Dr Oluwatoyin Salawu, a public health practitioner, and discusses the importance of disease prevention, outbreak detection, and health system strengthening.
