EV Fires Require Specialised Response, Says Fire Service

The Federal Fire Service (FFS), Lagos Command, has warned that fires involving electric vehicles (EVs) require specialised equipment, training, and firefighting techniques. The warning was issued by Chief Superintendent of Fire, Badmus Abdulsamad, at the 3rd Auto Industry Summit in Lagos. He noted that while battery-electric vehicles are statistically less likely to catch fire than petrol-powered vehicles, EV incidents can be more complex due to lithium-ion battery systems. One major hazard is thermal runaway, a self-sustaining chemical reaction that produces extreme heat and can be difficult to extinguish.
